Leaking soffits are typically caused by problems with your gutters or roof, such as blockages, damage, or poor installation. Water from these issues can drip down and saturate the soffit, leading to rot, cracks, and interior damp. It's essential to address the root cause quickly to prevent expensive long-term damage.

Common causes of leaking soffits
Blocked gutters:
The most frequent culprit, blocked gutters cause rainwater to overflow and run down the fascia board behind the gutter, where it saturates the soffit.

Damaged or incorrectly pitched gutters:
Leaks can occur at worn seals and joints in the guttering, while gutters that are not sloped correctly can cause water to pool and overflow.

Failed roofing felt:
The felt under your roof tiles directs rainwater into the gutters. If it has receded, water can be carried under the tiles and leak onto the soffits.

Roof leaks:
Problems with roof tiles, flashing around chimneys, or poorly sealed roof vents can allow water into the roof cavity. This moisture can then travel down and emerge at the soffit.
